Descrizione:
Questo piccolo, simpatico terrier ha due pollici di manto bianco liscio che copre un sottopelo denso e soffice. Ha gli occhi luminosi e vivaci, scuri e con uno sguardo penetrante.
Le orecchie del West Highland White Terrier sono piccole, appuntite e diritte, dando a questo grazioso cane l'aspetto sempre vigile ed attento.
Muove la coda lunga circa 15 cm in maniera vivace che non deve mai essere tagliata.
Ha un torace profondo e gli arti muscolosi, il cranio è leggermente convesso.
Temperamento:
Il Terrier è predisposto naturalmente al gioco ed è amichevole nei confronti di sconosciuti, inoltre è consigliato per chi ha bambini.
Se irritati si agitano ma non sono ostinati come molti altri Terrier.
Sono vivaci e si sanno comportare anche in presenza di altri cani, anche se a volte certi maschi possono essere aggressivi nei confronti di altri cani dello stesso sesso, comunque non sono aggressivi e potrà succedere che inseguano un gatto giusto per divertimento e che una volta raggiunto non gli facciano del male.
Anche se non è molto grande, risulta essere un buon cane da guardia.
Inoltre, sempre grazie alle sue dimensioni non troppo ingombranti, potrà essere trasportato facilmente e quindi potrà seguire il proprio padrone senza alcuna difficoltà.
Problemi di salute:
Alcuni possono riscontrare dei problemi cronici della pelle come eczemi o irritazioni cutanee, problemi all’anca, ernie, affezioni epatiche ed infine possono presentarsi casi di calcificazione mascellare.
Circostanze di vita:
Il Westy è adatto sia a chi vive in città che in paese, infatti vive bene anche in appartamento e non necessita di giardino, ma è un cane che non ama la solitudine.
Esercizio:
Come tutti i cani anche i Westy adorano passeggiare con il proprio padrone o correre e giocare liberi nel parco ma anche se per un giorno saltano la passeggiata o la corsa quotidiana, non vi terranno il broncio!
Longevità:
I Westy vivono fino a 15 anni e più.
Mantenimento:
Il loro doppio mantello è facile da tenere in ordine e perde poco o per nulla il pelo, basta semplicemente dedicare al proprio Westy cinque minuti al giorno per averlo sempre in ordine: una bella spazzolata vigorosa con le setole rigide è tutto quello che basta, questo dovrebbe essere sufficiente per mantenere il manto in ordine e pulito, ricorrendo così al bagnetto solo se necessario. Con le forbici dalle punte arrotondate si dovrà di tanto in tanto pareggiare il pelo intorno agli occhi e agli orecchi. L’intero manto dovrebbe essere pareggiato circa ogni quattro mesi e strippato due volte all’anno. C’è chi preferisce tosare invece di strippare.
